The annual EBU Media Cybersecurity Seminar is the only industry event focusing on cybersecurity for media in general and public service media in particular. Recent years have repeatedly seen media companies in red alert mode to prevent potential service disruptions: Disinformation campaigns during Covid-19, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the accompanying large scale cyber attacks and defensive operations, increased censorship of media and journalists in hostile environments, and events such as the Olympic games or the French elections, have illustrated the reality of such threats. Simultaneously, new technologies adopted by broadcasters have increased the number of attack vectors.
In this context, how do we ensure continuity of media operations, mitigate risks and protect staff and systems with effective cybersecurity practices?
MCS 2022 combined presentations on real-world issues with a focus on practical mitigation strategies for media organizations, with an eye on technologies such as HbbTV, 5G, Audio over IP, and security aspects of innovations such as Metaverse, distributed web and quantum computing. EBU Members and media system vendors discussed how to improve our industry's cybersecurity, such as by collaboratively setting cybersecurity requirements for products, media system vulnerability scanning, and the sharing of best practices.
