Demos at BroadThinking 2014

  • AMT - Automatic Multicast Tunneling: Bridging the multicast distribution gap (Cisco)

Showing how native multicast content can be delivered end to end even across infrastructure that only provides unicast capabilities. Either directly to end points such as a mobile devices or to a another segment such as a home network or enterprise network that is multicast enabled.

In a world where content delivery is growing exponentially, this provides a solution to the increase in-network resource usage for large scale live events such as sports or breaking news by gracefully handling flash crowds of viewers; AMT removes the stumbling block to widescale multicast adoption on public networks such as the internet.

The FAMIUM framework is an end-to-end prototype implementation meant for early technology evaluation
and interoperability testing. Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is the upcoming streaming standard
for the Web and will harmonize video delivery across the Internet. FAMIUM.player is a Web application based on the DASH-IF reference client, which uses W3C Media Source Extensions (MSE) and Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) for playback of DASH and DRM content. Furthermore, FAMIUM.player features live, multi-screen and ad-insertion capabilities. For interoperable encrypted content, FAMIUM.cenc relies on underlying DRM platforms that can be accessed via dedicated Content Decryption Modules (CDM). An implementation of a Microsoft PlayReady CDM for open source browsers will be presented.

  • Device conformance for MPEG-DASH. Testing client support for DASH-HEVC and client behaviour in real-world network conditions. (Digital TV Labs)

Demonstrating new features and increased test coverage for our DASH test harness and test suite. Building on last year's test suite for checking client conformance with the DASH Industry Forum's DASH-AVC/264 specification, this year we add DASH HEVC test vectors, as well as advanced network shaping tests to validate DASH client behaviour in the presence of packet loss, packet latency and restricted bandwidth conditions.

  • SVP 5500: the world’s first HEVC encoder (Ericsson)

Just as H.264 played a pivotal role in reducing the bit rate by 50% from MPEG-2, HEVC promises to offer 50% bandwidth savings over H.264 encoders. The demonstration will show live HEVC encoding of incoming video and displaying it on a screen. Bandwidth savings realised by HEVC not only allow operators to promote more HD channels in the same space but also open possibilities of new applications such as Multi-screen and Broadcast over LTE networks. As part of the demonstration for new applications, Ericsson will show high quality video delivery to mobile devices using HEVC and MPEG-DASH segmentation.

  • Cloud-based MPEG-DASH Transcoding and Streaming in Broadcast Scenarios (bitmovin)

High-quality MPEG-DASH live OTT broadcast using a cloud-based transcoding & streaming service together with the adaptive playback using DASH clients on multiple platforms, including HTML5, Flash and Android. In particular: content Generation/Transcoding using cloud-infrastructure of a live broadcast channel to multiple DASH quality representations for mobile devices (320p) up to PC/TV (1080p); playback on multiple devices (Laptop, Android Tablet and Android Phone) using MPEG-DASH clients for HTML5 and Adobe Flash, enabling up to 100 % higher quality/bandwidth utilization; Live Playback, Time-Shift Playback, On-Demand/Catchup Playback based on the EPG data of the broadcast stream.
